Important Election Highlights & Trivia
📝 This Election Facts
After the 2026 Assembly elections, TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, falling short of the 118-seat majority. In a week of intense political maneuvering and horse-trading, TVK successfully formed a coalition government. TVK invited the Congress (INC), which quit the DMK-led SPA and extended support. The party also received unconditional outside support from Left parties (CPI & CPI(M)), VCK, IUML, and the lone AMMK MLA. Amid allegations of forgery and counter-claims, TVK secured the backing of 120 MLAs. On 10 May 2026, TVK leader Vijay was sworn in as the ninth Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
📜 All-Time Records & Facts
Tamil Nadu (formerly Madras State) has had 22 Chief Ministers since 1947. The early period (1947–1967) was dominated by the Indian National Congress, with prominent leaders like K. Kamaraj and C. Rajagopalachari. The Dravidian era began in 1967 with C. N. Annadurai (DMK). M. Karunanidhi holds the record for the longest cumulative tenure. The AIADMK, founded by M. G. Ramachandran (MGR), alternated power with DMK for nearly six decades, with J. Jayalalithaa, O. Panneerselvam, and Edappadi K. Palaniswami as key figures. M. K. Stalin (DMK) served from 2021 to 2026. In a historic shift, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) was sworn in as the 22nd Chief Minister on 10 May 2026, heading a coalition government and ending nearly 59 years of Dravidian party dominance.
